Nicole Leung The Bluest Eye Autumn 1. It uses really simplistic sentence structure and vocabulary, but it does not sound like how a normal child would talk. It starts out like a normal paragraph but then with each paragraph, punctuation and eventually spacing disappear giving off an eerie feeling to it. This resembles the novel in the point that at the beginning of the novel, everything seems rather normal, however with each chapter, normality is lost. When the reader finally reaches the end of the novel, everything now seems to be out of control and the main character Pecola is shown to have lost her mind. 2. It is in one of the main character’s voice as she is setting up the scene by telling the readers about the scenery and the feeling of that season. The voice is thinking as she ponders the reason that there were no marigolds that fall of 1941. 3. The reader is left with questions and shock. The reader can automatically assume that this novel will deal with pain, hardships and suffering, and will altogether not be a very cheerful novel with a happy ending. 4. “Nuns go by as quiet as lust” and “drunken men and sober eyes sing in the lobby of the Greek hotel” are paradoxical and self-contradictory because they are comparing opposite things to each other. Perhaps they are used to show the irony in the book and how Pecola being raped and impregnated by her own father would not normally go together. 5. Pecola Breedlove is the protagonist of the novel and represents the scapegoat for the community. Although she is the main character, her mystery is kept throughout the book and the reader is never able to truly say that they understand and know her story. By the end of the novel, Pecola has been destroyed by the
