DOC Discussion 11/03/10 Bob Dylan – black working class vs. white working class – antagonistic relationship; white working class = pawns in a game (used as tools for economic elite/gov’t) Elites are using white working class to reinforce subordination of AA and keep white working class as well (economically) Connection: Tchen’s article – SF in mid-1800’s - conflict in SF: working class Chinese and Irish - fighting for jobs - Chinese workers were going to work in factories/railroads - First come = Chinese, then Irish were introduced - Irish came into picture to break the strike - Irish working class = pawns in the game - Chinese exclusion act was put into place to exclude Chinese; Chinese were no longer able to come to America until 1965, when they’re able to re- immigrate and have citizenship New Deal – 1932 - 1945 - After WWII & Great Depression - Roosevelt made programs to help people reintegrate into society - Social Security, insurance - Idea that you create a state that intervenes in the economy
