DOC Lecture Notes 11/10/10 Vietnam War Terms 1. selective service = military draft (conscription) - working class young male = basically no way to get out of it - people who had professional fathers working could get doctor to write a note for whatever made-up reason to exempt the son from the military service - over 200 soldiers a week - millions of Vietnamese soldiers lost/killed in war 2. American War in Southeast Asia, ca. 1962-1973 - NOT called Vietnam War because they had many wars… fought Chinese, French, US, JP. Etc. - Lasted over 10 years; combat - In middle of CW – rivalry b/w two systems 3. Proxy war - American War in Vietnam - Hot wars within 10 year wars - Called Proxy wars/super power (US) didn’t want to fight because they didn’t want nuclear wars - Threat of communism/China - US leadership was concerned with influence of China - Paranoid Cold War mentality - London Johnson, Richard Nixon, Kennedy 4. COINTELPRO (FBI counterintelligence program) - infiltrate/disrupt anti-war movement - used against anti-war movement - used by gov’t against Black Panthers, United Farm Workers Union, plant spies in organizations, try to cause violence, whatever they needed to do - they killed BPP members 5. Kent State, 1970 - president Nixon in office - CIA spies on other countries
