DOC Lecture Notes 11/17/10 Terms 1. Larry Kramer - 2. Keynesianism/social safety net (classic liberalism) - form of economic organization - John Kaynes - Creation and sustaining of social safety net - Elderly people who are poor don’t spend their final years living in the street without medical care/food/place to live - Keynesianism created Social Security insurance - Related to classic liberalism – what David Harvey calls it - Associated to Franklin Roosevelt and how he created New Deal after WWI 3. Privatization - safety net is less important than fact that we need to create economic conditions to allow individuals to succeed - “why should I pay for poor students to go to UC (why pay taxes for students to use?)” - it’s the INDIVIDUAL’S responsibility if they want something - increasing privatization (schools start losing funding… private burden falls under students and families) - part of neoliberalism 4. Neoliberalism = anti-liberalism (conservatism/”free market”) - in the US it’s called conservatism
