DOC 2 Final Key Terms 1. Social contract – precedes State of Nature; enter into this deal with the rest of political society that you will give up certain rights for the overall protection of the common good 2. State of Nature – set of rights for everyone to access and use just as long as it doesn’t go past morality; everyone has the opportunity to use the goods given by God to labor and create conveniences for themselves and for the common if possible (prevent spoilage) 3. Centralization vs. decentralization – centralization is bad because laws that are far away may not be as recognized and obeyed by people locally; decentralization is good because it involves active citizenship; when people make laws locally, they are more likely to obey because they were the ones who came up with them 4. Patriotism vs. nationalism – patriotism is good because it promotes active citizenship and celebrates American culture and also binds people together; nationalism is bad because it is more aggressive and encourages competition among nations to define what America and its ideals are, which are inaccurate. 5. Tyranny of majority/majority rule – majority rule leading to bad results because minorities are being excluded 6. Speech vs. conduct – Cohen wearing jacket vs. O’Brien burning draft card to communicate political messages 7. Slippery slope – fallacy; a small step of something could lead to a chain of
