Sharon Ng ICS 9 July 12, 2011 Matters of Race Questions Program One: The Divide 1. When do immigrants become Americans? Who gets to decide who's American? Immigrants technically become Americans when they get a green card, a representation of full citizenship in America. However, the dominant race and others who have fully assimilated to American culture and traditions may still see these new immigrants as “forever immigrants” because of their differences and because they haven’t had the chance to assimilate fully like everybody else. To be American, one generally speaks English fluently and follows American traditions. 2. Are we ready to consider race beyond black and white? We are ready to consider race beyond black and white, considering the fact that we take into account various races other than just black and white people, such as Asians and Latinos. 3. Should public money be used to support undocumented residents of a town or city? No, because if they are undocumented, then they are illegally living in the town or city. Program Two: Race Is/Race Ain't 1. Who determines the meaning of difference? Typically, the dominant group determines the meaning of difference. In America, white people are the dominant ideology and therefore, they generally believe that they can determine who is different from them and who isn’t. In addition, every individual of a group also determines the meaning of difference because they can identify others who are different from them.
