Discovering Newton’s 3 rd Law June 23, 2009 Purpose In this experiment, students will practice drawing interaction schemas, use a force sensor to explore various force interactions, and develop physical models to describe force interactions for strings, pulleys, and friction. Hypothesis It will be impossible to tell which person pulls a string with more force all forces are the same. Materials-PC-DataStudio-light string that doesn’t stretch much-four 500 g masses, two 250 g masses, and various other masses of your choice-four light pulleys that are low in friction-wood block with hook-one or two force sensors Procedure 1) Two partners each held a force sensor. 2) DataStudio was used to record data for force vs. time on each force sensor. 3) Each force sensor was zeroed and played around with by pulling on it, pushing on it, etc. 4)
