Sharon Ng Psychology 1 April 3, 2009 Psychology Essay #1 – Soul and Spirit In this audio, philosopher Raymond Martin expresses his thoughts about the intellectual history of personal identity. He based his speaking on his book, “The Rise and Fall of Soul and Self: An Intellectual History of Personal Identity.” The audio mentions how the theories of self and personal identity developed from the ancient Greeks to the present day. Larger controversies, intellectual trends, and ideas of the soul and spirit have changed over the years as people explore the subject. Speaking of change, Raymond Martin also mentions the prevalent change that is found in people every day. Change can be caused by many factors. First of all, he mentions how all this started. He makes an important point about materialists laying groundwork for future theories. The ideas of the church fathers are also expressed. Martin notes that there is a shift away from religious and purely philosophical notions of self and identity to more scientific and social conceptions. He elaborates about the human spirit and soul, and the existence personal identity. I found this audio clip very interesting because I could almost relate to it very well.
