Sharon Ng Psychology 1 May 18, 2009 Psychology Essay #8 – Tourette’s Syndrome This audio covered some interesting aspects of the Tourette’s Syndrome. It is an inherited neuropsychiatric disorder with onset in childhood, characterized by the presence of multiple physical tics and at least one vocal tic. Tourette’s is part of a spectrum of tic disorders. This forum takes a look at Tourette’s Syndrome, in light of a recent HBO documentary, and explores issues - both physiological and social - faced by young people diagnosed with the condition. Those with Tourette’s are sometimes associated with the exclamation of obscene words or socially inappropriate and derogatory remarks [minority]. People with Tourette’s have normal life expectancy and intelligence. The severity of the tics decreases for most children as they pass through their teen years, and extreme Tourette’s in adulthood is rare. There is no effective medication to cure Tourette’s, but there are certainly medications and therapies that can help. Some symptoms of Tourette’s may include OCD and ADHD.
