Ng 1 Sharon Ng Professor Evans, TA Lila Sharif SOCI 2 – A03 31 January 2011 Culture and Socialization Assignment 1. In the music video, “POSER – The history and evolution of the peace sign” by Wong Fu Productions, the Formosan Agency of Broadening Ethnology observes cultural practices between America and Asia, particularly in the photographic posing using the V sign. It all started when Winston Churchill used the V sign to represent victory. Soldiers and troops were photographed and journalists compiled their photos and distributed it around the world. Eventually, other people began using it in their photos as well. During the Vietnam War, the V signed evolved to mean peace, and it is now called the “peace sign” in America. In East Asia, however, the peace sign has definitely lost its original meaning, but citizens of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea are using this sign in their photographs in cute ways. They were influenced by American culture, and are constantly emulating the trend. From the peace sign, they’ve developed new poses when taking photographs.
