Sociology 2 Essay #1 Outline The themes and contradictions of the Enlightenment discourse influence the birth of Sociology in the 1800s because they both contribute to a new group of ideas about society. This is always changing, which allows people to think about society in different ways, forming the study of sociology. I. Background on the Enlightenment a. The Enlightenment was an age of reason advocating authority. The Enlightenment discourse was contradicting because there was no single thought, and there were paradoxes behind the different philosophies. The Enlightenment period also questioned institutions, values, and the strong notion in rationality and science. b. This period was vital to the birth of sociology because it focused on all the important developments in Western society, which then had an impact in the rest of the world. c. The political, economical, and cultural changes studied by philosophes at this time also contributed to the emergence of sociology. II. Universalism a. Universalism is the idea that reason and science can be applied in every situation. It assumes that any educated person could, in principle, know everything. b.
