Megan Carter GEO 211 – Global Change Dr. Maingi, Dr. Yeboah March 2, 2010 Module Essay 2: Urbanization What is the origin of urbanization? Briefly identify various attributes that you will associate with urban places around the globe, irrespective of culture. Using an example each from the core, semi-periphery and periphery, illustrate how globalization is creating new urban geographies in each of these kinds of places. Urbanization is derived from civilization. Without the foundation of a civilization urban areas would never have flourished into what they are today. Urbanization can be dated back thousands of years to the ancient Mayans in Caracol and cities in China. Archeologists who have discovered these cities found evidence of advanced civilizations such as items that would only be located there through trade, the way the cities are set up with a Cardinal orientation, and forms of writing. All of these things are the basis of urbanization. Urban places around the world have certain attributes associated with them no matter what kind of culture they have. One example of this is the places’ degree of aggregation, or their size and form. They are large and have an unusual population density as compared to that of rural areas, and they show signs of immense architecture and fortifications.
