Dear Father: I am pleased to inform you of the land I purchased just south of Oxford, OH on this 2 nd day of December 1837. We have yet to make use of the land in terms of residence or pasture, but we will make sure to begin building a sturdy home as soon as we can, because in this weather it is almost impossible. The trip from Virginia was a long one, but I do not regret a minute of it. After receiving notice of land in Ohio to be purchased my son, Benjamin, and I decided we would leave before December struck and we would be stuck in Virginia until Spring came. We left the 22 nd of November, the weather typical of this time of year. Rain, mud, and fierce cold winds struck our horses and us without avail. We stopped a few towns down the next day to stay with a cousin of Mary’s, may God rest her soul, whom was quite hospitable. She provided us with extra food and water for the trip, which I tried to tell her we did not need, but she would not accept us leaving without it. We set off once again on the third day, the 24 th , starting north. It was quite dull the next three days, as Benjamin and I just talked about politics and what we thought would be on the other side of this expedition, which neither of us could tell. We brought extra blankets and made camp in the open cold air, which thankfully was free of pests and precipitation. Finally on the 27
