Megan Carter REL 202 – Religions of Asia November 4 th , 2010 Reflective Essay Blessings: The Tsoknyi Nangchen Nuns of Tibet In the 1960’s all of the nangchen nunneries were destroyed in the Cultural Revolution of the People’s Republic of China. This reflects the idea that men seem to be of more importance in many roles, especially in Buddhism. Many of the nuns were put into work camps, some returned to their families for safety, and some hid in caves waiting for the day they could return and rebuild their nunneries by hand. Blessings: The Tsoknyi Nangchen Nuns of Tibet showed that women have grown to have high religious status, such as the nuns of the eastern part of Tibet, since then. Tsoknyi Rinpoche is the third reincarnation of the man who made it possible for women to become nuns of high stature. In 2005, he led a group of his female students from the western hemisphere to visit the nuns and learn about their past, their present, their beliefs, and why they decided to become nuns at such a high cost. It seemed as if the people from the areas near the nuns looked to them for support,
