Case Study Two, F09 Group Case Study Question James Dicello Yang Ding 1) In this class you use Microsoft Office to complete your homework assignments. Office is what’s known as a standalone application. You install it on your computer and it runs on your own personal machine. There has been a trend lately to move whole applications online. These online applications are called Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) and try to emulate the functionality of a desktop application. One of the more prominent RIAs is Google Docs and Spreadsheets. It consists of an online word processor and an online spreadsheet. Your job will be to use this service and answer the questions below. Navigate to http://docs.google.com/ to check out the word processor and spreadsheet. You may need to sign up for a Google account if you don’t have one already. They’re free. Role 1: Your job is to use the word processor and compare it to Microsoft Word. What are some of the features of Google’s online word processor? Is it user friendly? Can you save documents? Since it’s online, do you notice any lag from when you click a button or enter text to when it actually shows up? What kind of things can Word do better than Google’s word processor? Finally, go online and see if you can find some reviews of Google’s word processor. What do other people say? Which one would you rather use? Why? Role 2: Your job is to use Google’s spreadsheet application and compare it to Microsoft Excel. What are some of the nice features of Google’s spreadsheet program? Is it user friendly?
