Key Concepts 10 Kwangju (1980) - The Gwangju Democratization Movement ( ª * ) refers to the violent suppression of a popular uprising in the city of Gwangju , South Korea from May 18 to May 27 , 1980 . It is simply called 5.18 by South Koreans. The government denounced the uprising as a rebellion instigated by Kim Dae-jung and his followers. April 19 (1960) revolution - a popular uprising in April 1960, led by labor and student groups, which overthrew the autocratic First Republic of South Korea under Syngman Rhee. It led to the peaceful resignation of Rhee and the transition to the Second Republic. The events were touched off by the discovery of a body in Masan Harbor, that of a student killed by a tear-gas shell in demonstrations against the elections of March. , ( 7 @ @ @ .
