Tonghak – Eastern learning interpretation First Colonialism Lecture Japanese victory Kabo-Reform (1894) S-J War – 1894 – 1895 Kabo – formally put an end to class/status system, formal distinction between yangban and everyone else. Formally put an end to private slavery. Formally put an end to the exam system. * Lot of countries that is interested in colonizing Korea (Japan, China, Russia, England, France, U.S.) After Japan beats China, China is off the list. Decade later, basically Russia has been expanding into Siberian possession for centuries. Russia and Korea gets into war (1904-1905) largely in around Korean peninsula. Japan’s naval modernization takes effect and wins the war. This shocks the European because they counted on white racial superiority. For Japan to beat Russia was a big shock. This kicks Russia off the list. Around this time Japan signs peace treaty with England, so England is off the list. France is not a much of a player for Korea, so off the list.
