Unformatted text preview: Tonghak – Eastern Learning, formed by Choe Je-u to help ease the lot of the farmers suffering from poverty and exploitation, as well as to restore political and social stability. Tonghak rapidly gained broad acceptance among the peasantry. Another famous religious movement, Chondogyo, evolved from Tonghak movement. the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) and annexation – conflict that grew out of the rival imperialist ambitions of the Russian Empire and the Japanese Empire over Manchuria and Korea. After Japans defeated Russia, Russia recognized Korea as part of the Japanese sphere of influence and agreed to evacuate Manchuria. Japan would annex Korea in 1910 “Developmental Colonialism” – the March 1 (1919) movement – one of the earliest displays of Korean independence movements during the Japanese occupation of Korea.
