Ecological Services and Environmental True Cost Pricing 2 According to the web definition, ecological services are ecological functions of healthy ecosystems which serve all living organisms through purification of air and water, maintenance of biodiversity, decomposition of wastes, soil and vegetation generation and renewal, pollination of crops and natural vegetation, groundwater recharge through wetlands, seed dispersal, greenhouse gas mitigation, and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. (Wiktionary, 2007) Birds for example provide ecological services in the form of controlling the populations of rodents and insects, remove dead animal carcasses, and spread plants throughout their habitats by helping with pollination and consuming and excreting plant seeds. Every living species of plant and animal all play their part in maintaining the ecosystem
