Week 4 – DQ’s Groups and Teamwork Describe the Five Stages of Tuckman’s Theory of Group Development Kinicki and Kreitner (2009) contend that the five stages of Tuckman’s Theory of Group Development are: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning. Stage one is consistent with new members experiencing anxiety and uncertainty in regards to where they fit in with the group and the role they will be playing. Individuals are also uncertain about who should take the leadership role and what the goals of the group will be. Stage two describes individuals of the group testing the leadership’s policies and exploring the boundaries of the group in order to determine how they fit in to the power structure. Stage three has been reached when “group cohesiveness” exists among the members, when power struggles have diminished and individuals have found their place in the group and are comfortable with the roles they will be playing. Stage four is about working productively as a group toward the group’s goals. Kinicki and Kreitner describe this stage as a mature group whose climate is that of open communication, strong cooperation, and lots of helping behavior. Stage five is reached when the work is done and the group’s goals have been met. At times, this stage breeds a sense of loss due to members having to return to their individual work after putting forth the effort to fit in and work with a group. Describe Groupthink, and identify at least four of its symptoms.
