BUS 308 – Statistics for Managers - Weekly Assignments Week 1 - Performance Report You are the manager at a company and are asked to present a report on the year-to-date performance of your division. What type of statistical information would you include in your report? In particular, which descriptive statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, etc.) do you think would best represent the main aspects of the performance of your division? What types of graphical presentation (histogram, dot plot, stem-and-leaf, bar chart, etc.) would you include? If I was a manager at a company and had to present a report on the year-to-date performance of my division, I would include in my report statistics such as gross sales including net gains or losses, also comparing this data to prior years to show improvement of performance. I would also include data regarding how my budget was spent. To depict this information, I would use multiple graphs. Bar charts can be used to show the least and most popular items sold. Bar charts can also be used to compare prior years with present year to decipher if employees’ performance is improving. Also, a dot plot can be used to display gains and/or losses of income. In addition, a pie chart can be used to display the different areas that generate expenses in order to decipher how the budget is spent. While breaking down the graphical representation, the mean of the sales and the median of the gains/losses can be determined over the span of years being compared, in which case a standard deviation is determined which allows for management to decide what is/isn’t working for the department. Week 1 – Descriptive Statistics Find and post an example of a statistical analysis of a business related topic from print or electronic media. Discuss in detail the meaning of the descriptive statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, etc.) and plots (histogram, dot plot, stem-and-leaf, bar chart, etc.) presented in your source. According to Anthony Mirhaydari, contributor to Moneyblog on msn.com, over the years, the
