BUS 303 – HRM Weekly Assignments Week 1 Strategic management approach to Human Resources Management Internal and external factors exert a strong influence on the HRM function. List one external factor that you feel has a powerful influence on your company’s HRM function and explain why. One example of an external factor that has a powerful influence on a HRM’s functions is the economy. A downturn in the economy dramatically affects city, state, and federal budgets, which in turn creates tough situations for HRM to handle. For example, if the fire department takes a cut in their budget then firefighters must be laid off. HRM must make severance packages, decide who will be let go, and then break the devastating news to the employees. In addition, they must work to 1) assure the remaining employees that their jobs are safe and 2) fight to save more jobs from bring lost. The economy can have a very powerful affect on companies which, in turn, can lead HRM into a very stressful and uncomfortable position. Global Human Resources Management How does the global environment of business today impact the role of HR within an organization? With business expanding into global positions, the role of HR takes on more meaning. Within the organization, HR needs to create a global mindset in the employees and work to create unity between differing cultures, as well as addressing any issues and trends that differ when merging into a broadened marketplace. In addition, HR should work to continually gain the knowledge and understanding of the different nationalities, cultures and religions, and how they will affect the business and its employees. Week 2 Planning, Aligning, and Forecasting What is Human Resource planning? How does the HR planning process facilitate the achievement of an organization’s strategic objectives? If you can, use your organization as an example. the numbers and types of employees to be recruited into the organization or phased out of the organization” (125). This process facilitates achievement of an organization’s objectives because it sets the organization up to meet demands of the marketplace, as well as surpass the expectations of its competitors. If HR recruits employees who are the most knowledgeable and experienced for the position, they will are enabling a more effortless growth.
