September 17, 2007 Heather Lonks Political Science 1 Economic Models Political economy – tight relationship between econ and politics How the models operate C APITALISM – (US) o Competition o Incentives o Laissez faire o Private property – rights associated with property, another form of incentive o Psychological idea that humans are greedy – Greed is good! Greed serves as energy source Good to chase after self interest – selfishness – take care of me and my own Accept humannature Free market – same thing Laissez Faire – leave it alone, hands off, gov’t off of the business community – business not micro managed by the state, $$$$ a lot of money All based on competition Compatiton defines capitalism Gov’t social relations foreign policy All strung together Made us the us Made us prosperous High standard of living Socialism and communism = cooperative models lack insentive to work harder, longer, more effective, Since 1991 (soviet union collapses) socialism / communis cannot compete against capitalism
