Chapter 12 Ethics and Effects Ethical Guidelines Self-Regulation – Rules that people within the electronic media industry set for themselves. EX: Radio Television News Directors Associations has Code of Broadcast News Ethics. Ethical self-regulation comes from individual stations or networks, which have their own written or unwritten codes. Department of standards and Practices (Broadcast Standards) – At commercial broadcast networks, DSP makes sure all program and commercials adhere to good taste. Screens them several times thru out production. DSP operates independently of programming or sales and reports directly to top network management. At local radio and TV station, the broadcast standards functions may not be as formal. GM frequently performs function on as needed basis, or function is delegated to whatever group handles the station’s legal matters or public relations.
