Umbrella Perspective 4 levels: Social system, organizational infrastructure, hardware and software, individual user. Hardware – physical equipment related to technology. Most tangible part. Software – messages communicated thru the technology system. Includes information maniupulated by the computer (ie text, spreadsheet) as well as the instructions used by the computer to manipulate the data. Organizational Infrastructure – group of organizations involved in the production and distribution of the technology Social System (top level) – political, economic and media systems as well as other groups of individuals or organizations serving a common set of functions in society. Individual User (handle) – implies that the relationship between the user and a technology must be examined in order to get a handle on the technology. Contexts: enabling, limiting, motivating (provide reason for adoption), inhibiting (provide disincentive for adoption - cost). All four can be found at every level except for hardware – which can only be enabling or
