Allison Lo FT 303 Professor Jaramillo 12 / 1 / 2009 How have ‘old’ media adapted to the changing landscape of entertainment? Old media has had to branch out into online content or team up with new media companies in order to survive and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of entertainment. Launched recently on October 30, 2009, Epix is a prime example of how several old media film companies are banding together to compete in the digital marketplace by providing content to consumers through a multiplatform approach. Epix, a joint venture between Viacom’s Paramount Pictures, Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM), is a premium movie channel with a video on demand component and an online movie service (epixHD.com), all of which are currently being distributed by Verizon FiOS. Epix’s unique selling point is its multiple platforms of content distribution. Consumers now have a one-stop destination for viewing movies and media entertainment; all of which can be accessed via the Internet, television or a wireless mobile device (“Verizon to be”). In a nutshell, Epix is providing consumers “content they want, when they want it and where they want it,” (“Verizon to be”). Epix was initially formed in 2008 after Paramount, Lions Gate, and MGM’s movie deals with Showtime had expired. The three old media film companies parted ways with “CBS Corp’s Showtime after Showtime had sought to cut the license fees it paid the studios” (Zeidler, “Epix to Launch”).
