Adam Ohanesian 12/7/2010 Ethical Issues in Management Ethics is an important topic in life as well as in business and management. I feel someone’s ethics is a direct reflection of who they are as a person, as well as how good or bad an employee you are in the workforce. For example, if you practice poor ethics, more times than not you will be reprimanded. You may not immediately be caught, however it is simply a matter of time. Enron and MCI WorldCom are two examples of poor management ethics that come to mind. In the scenario provided, Guffey’s “Tools for Doing the Right Thing” should all be considered. I do not feel that informing staff member would be illegal, however it is a confidentiality breach. As an upper manager, I was informed to keep the issue of cuts confidential by the company. Whether I was orally informed, or I received a memo stating this was confidential information, I should not be sharing it with anyone, internal or external of the company. Looking at the issue from the staff members view, I can understand the concern, however my personal ethics would tell me not to inform the staff member of the cuts under any circumstance given the confidentiality agreement. There are a couple alternative solutions to this issue that come to mind, first being to tell the staff member that I am not aware of any cuts. Second, I can tell the staff member that I can inquire with my superior and get back to them, thus buying some time. If my solutions to the staff member are not effective, I can explain the issue to
