Mentoring2Mentoring and its role in OrganizationsCoaching and mentoring can provide an array of benefits for organizations of all sizes,especially small businesses. When conducted in an efficient and productive manner, coaching andmentoring provides employees a way to connect, learn and grow within the company and alongtheir own career paths.Why spend the time?What are the benefits?How does a person “chose”the right mentor or is one chosen for them?These, amongst others, are some key questions fordiscussion on whether there is value added for any organization to ensourage and implement amentoring program.Our class text dedicates a whole chapter on this topic. One study mentioned states thatthere are five areas where mentoring/coaching can enhance company performance.These includeinterpersonal skills; communication to include listening, presentations and speaking; leadershipskills; certain cognitive skills like prioritizing appropriately, decision-making and strategicthinking; and self-management focused on time management, emotion and anger management anda solid work-life balance (Peterson, 1993b).Coaching and mentoring should involve pairing experienced professionals with employeesthat could use help adapting to the environment and culture of the workplace. This can includepairing a mentor with new employees to help them settle into the surroundings and get off to agood start.Coaching often comes in play when a new employee or current employee can benefit
