PSC 2302 American Constitutional Development Interview with Chief Justice John Roberts C-SPAN, Oct. 9, 2009 History of the Court 1. Who does C.J. Roberts identify as the “Great Chief”? John Marshall, he was actually the fourth though. 2. What earned this individual such a title? He took the job seriously, served in it for three decades, and responsible for the establishment of the principle that the court can review acts of congress for constitutionality. 3. How many justices currently sit on the Supreme Court? They started with six, but they now have 9 4. When was this number established? Shortly after the civil war and has remained intact since. 5. What was the court packing plan proposed by Franklin Roosevelt and why did it fail? Allowed him to appoint new justices on the court immediately in order to get a court that would rule in his favor. Country rose up against it because the public recognized the importance of the court as an independent check on the other branches of government. The Role of the Supreme Court
