Chapter 11: Supply Chain Management Supply Chain - Value chain: there is value added to the product at every stage of the process - Supply segment = upstream - Demand segment = downstream Facilities - Supply chain is basically the process from raw materials to the consumers Functions and Activities - There are a number of discrete responsibilities within the supply chain. Typical Supply Chains - There will be a range of suppliers that may have numerous tiers. - Depending on your point of focus, there will be numerous customers for suppliers and vice versa. - Service supply chains are usually shorter than a manufacturing supply chain because of logistics issues Supply Chain Management - There is significant efficiencies to be tapped into - Managing the whole and parts is becoming more important Supply Chain Managers - The internal handling and external logistics Key SCM Issues - Match supply and demand effectively and efficiently. Create the best possible value for the customer at the lowest possible price and still have the organization make a good amount of money - Were concerned with resilience: how do we react to the unexpected? How can we build in efficiencies without building points of failure Strategic Responsibilities
