Biological Basis of Life What are Genes?? A short strand of DNA that codes for a certain characteristic or trait Genes are recipes for protein 1. Structural genes (body parts) 2. Regulatory genes (enzymes, etc.) Genes are located on chromosomes 1. A mutation occurs when the sequence of bases in a gene is altered Universal Genetic Code All life's DNA is composed of the same molecules and carries on similar functions This implies a common ancestry for all life on the planet Differences come from how DNA is arranged Chromosomes Chromosomes are long strands of genetic material 1. Arranged in pairs because you get one of each from each parent Types of Chromosomes Autosomes 1. Govern all physical characteristics except sex Sex chromosomes: X and Y 1. Mammal females- two X 2. Mammal males- one X and one Y Mitosis: 1. Cell division in somatic cells (non-sex) 2. Occurs during growth and repair/replacement of tissues Meiosis 1. Is the production of gametes (sex cells)
