Leibniz Preface to the New Essays Pg. 291-306 -got to preview Locke’s ‘essay concerning human understanding’ -planned to publish critique called ‘new essays’ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -reasons for publishing response to Locke: -put his thoughts in good company so they could gain favor -make his work easier -easier to follow someone else than start from scratch -add to what Locke has given -does disagree at times w/ Locke -Locke’s system more like Aristotle’s -his more like Plato -parallel between Locke’s views and his own rather than purely one or other (easier to compare, etc.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -begin with differences b/t them about subjects of importance 1) question of soul -Aristotle/Locke: soul as empty as blank tablet, everything on it comes from senses and experience -Leibniz/Plato: soul contains sources of notions/doctrines from beginning, awoken by external sources on occasion 2) whether all truths depend on experience (induction) or some on another foundation ( rationalism vs. empiricism ) -some can be seen before they are tested -we must contribute something -senses necessary for all actual knowledge but not sufficient to give us all of it -senses only give particular/individual truths -even all instances confirming a ‘general truth’ do not establish universal necessity of that truth (what has happened before does not have to happen again) -proof of necessary truths (like mathematics) cannot depend on instances -or testimony of senses, although senses still needed -logic, metaphysics, morals full of these truths (laws of reason)
