5 th Meditation Descartes notes Concerning the Essence of Material Things, and Again Concerning God, That He Exists -try to find if anything certain about material things -before consider existence of them, first consider my ideas of them -see if ideas clear/distinct -can distinctly imagine concept of “continuously” -can perceive countless particulars of it (shapes, numbers, movement) -so truthful that at first does not feel like learning but rather recalling -as if previously in him -has countless ideas of certain things that may not exist outside him -does not mean they are nothing -not things he made, but of own true/immutable natures -ex: triangle -even if not outside him, still has essence/form/nature he did not create -can demonstrate it’s properties, even though he hadn’t previously -then he did not fabricate it -came from external things by senses? -no, can define properties of other things that he has not sensed in same way -knows these properties to be true and something, not nothing -to perceive things clearly is to know them clearly
