Abnormal Psychology 16:42 Rosenhaus and Seligman One of the most difficult tasks in abnormal psychology is defining abnormal  psychology Different definitions Statistical infrequency Violation of societal norms Personal distress Disability and dysfunction Unexpectedness The biggest obstacle to learn is what you already know The Tyranny of the Known We think we know something so well that we wont even pay attention to the  evidence People are driven by shame Their ego gets in the way of everything People are motivated by control and love The more love you have the less control  The fundamental dynamic that all personalities are organized around is the  desire for love and the fear of losing love The best psychology of love is implicit Relationships bring up our ideas of inadequacy Babies recognize love The diagnostic system that is overwhelming the views of doctors and nurses is  the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual- DSM

Chapter 2 16:42 Myths Myths are dangerous cause it’s so easy to convince people that it’s true One myth is people are inherently bad and selfish This is not true  If you organize your life around principles like this, then it’s not good  You need to look underneath the surface or you’ll really believe this myth -To the extent that our parents don’t love us, we separate ourselves from love -The most important question facing any person is “who am I” -Buddha says that everyone deep down feels inadequate - the worse a person feels about himself the worse their psychological problems - the source of most psychological problems is that people can only get better  when they succeed - love of money is the root of all evils - understand repetition compulsion on page 33 - attachment- will not be happy if you’re attached to something- page 34 Pleasure/pain hypothesis- I must avoid pain and gain pleasure Unconditional love- redundant term. Love is unconditional - Emotion is contagious you sense other people’s emotionality and it tends to stir your own.
