Gomez 1 Nicholas Gomez Reba Bailey English 101-074 6 May 2011 Final Portfolio: Research Paper On March 26, 2010 my world changed forever. It was a beautiful day out so of course, like usual on days like this one, my sister took my niece and nephews out for a drive. Little did she know that this drive would affect each and every one of her loved ones. She took her eyes off the road for a split second causing her to drift onto the shoulder, eventually overcorrecting which sent the car into a tumbling motion off the side of the road. By the time help had arrived at the scene it was too late; my sister was gone; taken by a mere distraction while driving. She was only 27 years old. The effects of distracted driving really aren’t worth it in the long run. Yes, of course they do happen and my own personal example shown above is first hand evidence of that, but distracted driving is beginning to become a little excessive and unnecessary with the incorporation of texting and driving, as well as talking on the phone while driving. It seems as if since “these devices are integrated into everyday life, drivers mistakenly assume they can be used safely while operating a motor vehicle” (Jacobsen) which is far from the truth. According to the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP) “more than 85% of cell phone users admitted to using their phone on at least one occasion while driving, and more than 27% used their phones during half or more of their trips,” also “in a 2009 poll conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety... 21 percent [of drivers] self reported that they send and receive text messages while driving” (Distracted Driving Prevention Act 2009) so it is definitely clear to

Gomez 2 me that society does know of this developing epidemic in our world today. The majority of today’s drivers seem to fall victim to this problem, however, I feel as though only the basics are being portrayed. Since the basics are all that is being provided to the public, it is as if the people are only taking in so much and in doing so they are just blowing it all off as if the problem is actually not a problem at all. The many facts and statistics of distracted driving need to come out and an overall awareness of this problem needs to be spread throughout today’s society. We must take responsibility and take a stand together against distracted driving. Where can we look for information regarding distracted driving? And how can we get involved in spreading awareness about it as well? Well of course there is always online for a start, as well as your local car insurance company and even the Department of Motor Vehicles themselves. The information is definitely not limited and support groups against distracted driving are being formed daily. One in particular goes by the name of Focus Driven. Focus Driven is a “nonprofit organization devoted specifically to raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving… [and] is modeled after Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), which
