Nick Gomez Reba Bailey English 102-074 28 January 2011 Sifting the Ashes Critical Analysis The use of ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade the audience is definitely evident in this essay, there’s no doubt about that. Of the three however, I really think that one sticks out the most; ethos. Yes, it’s true that cigarette and tobacco companies try to twist their words and persuade you to try their products and eventually get you hooked on them, but I don’t think that this article was about that at all. This article was very truthful and filled with facts and much of it was seen through the eyes of a smoker himself. There was no beating around the bush here. The former smoker spoke solely from experience and told us everything that he had been through and just his smoking story in general. When presenting the facts and background of the history of smoking, I felt as if he was telling us just what I already knew.
