Chap 3 1. Structure of the nucleus- A. Thompson discovered that cathode rays were charged particles because the bent in the presence of an electrical field. Calculated mass/ charge ration and called them electrons. B. Goldstein proved that there where positive particles. Went toward the cathode. C. Milkman – held D. Rutherford determined that the atom is mostly empty space. The center is a dense mass called the nucleus and the outer part is taken up by electrons. The electrons make up the volume of the atom. The positive bullets were deflected very sharply. The electrons are negatively charged and the nucleus is positively charged. 2. Put all of the experiments together. Particle Symbol Mass Charge proton p 1 1+ neutron n 1 0 electron e' 1/1837 1- atomic number = number of protons. Determines which element it is. mass number = protons + neutrons 3. Isotopes - same element but varying number of neutrons. electron
