Currie 06:10 Murder Rate: Men Age: 15-29 o America: 24:100,000 o Japan: 0.5:100,000 o Brazil: 80:100,000 o 25 times more than the French (Americans) o 20 times more than the Germans (Americans) o Blacks in U.S: 83:100,000 o Latinos in U.S: 29:100,000 o Non-Hispanic: 5:100,000 Homicide is leading cause of death in Blacks from 10-mid 30’s. Black male is more likely to get murdered than attend a UC. Women in U.S. are nine times more likely to get murdered than French  men. Crime varies enormously from one society to another. How does this tie into our society? 1/3 rd  of children in urban areas have PTSD in America due to violence. Higher  than troops returning from war. People in state prison seven times higher than the 70’s. Federal, state, and local jails: 2.4 million people imprisoned in U.S. This would  make it the 4 th  largest city behind New York, LA and Chicago but ahead of  Houston. California prison population : 1980’s – 22,000 Present – 180,000. More than  Germany and UK combined.

More than 700,000 get out of jail every year in U.S. 3:10 black men will spend time in prison sometime in their lives. o 1:6 Latinos. Cost: 60 Billion a year on corrections 70 Billion on police 40 Billion on courts California – 11 Billion on Prisons o 22 prisons were built while only 1 state college was built. How to measure crime: Uniform Crime Reports (UCR): Published by the FBI. # of crime reported by  people. Focused on 8 index crimes: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated  assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson. First four= violent.  Latter 4= property. National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS): Published by the FBI. Asks if  you were a victim of crime. Self-Report Studies: ask people if they’ve committed crimes before.
