Place: Delos-Birth-Muthos…..only place his mother could give birth to him…He is an illegitimate child of Zeus. Hera doesn’t want him born so she gets all of solid earth to not let Apollo be born. Delos was not solid earth so she had Apollo there. Festival in Delos celebrating his birth. Delphi- Oracle...Apollo goes to Telfusa (springs and lush meadows)…Telfusa won’t let him build a temple there because of congestion and pollution…He chooses Delphi… Epithets: Phoebus, Far-Shooting, Pythian (God of the rot, kills dragon and he tells it to rot) Demeter Attributes Seasons Nature (fertility of the Earth, Persephone) Life/Death. Seasons (winter when daughter in the underworld and fertile when she is with Demeter) Eleusis (Mysteries) The Olympian Gods Zeus: most powerful of the gods. Attributes: connected with position as the ruler. Scepter, throne, lightning. Hera: married to Zeus. Attributes: veil represents marriage to Zeus. Scepter and throne. Poseidon: God of the sea. Attributes: trident. Demeter: Product of the fertile grain. Attributes: the caring and nurturing mother. Athena: Attributes: spear, shield, aegis. Parthenon. Virgin Goddess. Artermis: associated with wild animals. Virgin Goddess. Ares: god of war. September 30, 2009 Epiphany: when divine spirit is in the presence of a mortal. Every now and then the Gods announce their presence. Disguise recognition. Examples: Apollo to the delphinians. Demeter and Metenera: burning the mortality of the baby. Awarded for you attitude if you recognize the presence of a god, but punished if you fail to recognize the gods.
