It is Islamism as a political ideology that makes these countries distinct. • 26 mainly North African and the Middle Eastern countries. Common Themes: • Patrimonialism and Personalism= leadership develops around a dominant figure • Islamic Law: Shari’a= mixed use with Western law, varies across states • Social divisions: two major sects” Shi’ah and Sunni (most Sunni), economic inequality, and gender inequality • Separation of Church and State: Iraq/ Turkey vs Iran?Pakistan/Saudi Arabia.
