Islam prescribes a legal system, the source of social rules, and a political ideology- it transcends race, language and political borders. It is Islamism as a political ideology that makes these countries distinct. 26 mainly North African and the Middle Eastern countries. Common Themes: Patrimonialism and Personalism= leadership develops around a dominant figure Islamic Law: Sharia= mixed use with Western law, varies across states Social divisions: two major sects Shiah and Sunni (most Sunni), economic inequality, and gender inequality Separation of Church and State: Iraq/ Turkey vs Iran?Pakistan/Saudi Arabia.
