Scientific Method Cognitive Dissonance: Most people’s beliefs are “sticky” and don’t change/update because of how the mind work. Cognitive dissonance is a state of imbalance between cognitions (i.e., attitudes, emotions, beliefs or values) The existence of dissonance, being psychologically uncomfortable, will motivate the person to try to reduce dissonance and achieve consonance. When dissonance is present, in addition to trying to reduce it, the person will actively avoid situations and information which would likely increase dissonance. Pacifism: Assetion: war is never justified Thought experiment (what if) The year is 1944 Hitler is in power He is killing millions of people There is no way to stop him other than through violence Waiting = more people die Dilemma you must decide between war and allowing genocide to continue.
