Purpose The purpose of this lab is to construct an ammeter (0-100 mA) and a voltmeter (0- 10 V) using a galvanometer. Theory The galvanometer is the basic indicating component of all deflection-type meters. o It is an electromagnetic device capable of detecting very small currents. o It consists of a coil of wire mounted on bearings between two poles of a permanent magnet. When a current passes through the coil, it experiences a torque and rotates the pointer along the scale until balanced by the torque supplied by the two small springs. The deflection is proportional to the current in the coil. By adding a resistor to a galvanometer and a new display is can be seen as a voltmeter or ammeter, or any specific scale desired. The dc Voltmeter o We are trying to design a circuit that can be connected across a load resistance R that will allow a small current that is proportional to the voltage difference to the flow through the galvanometer, and that will divert as little current as possible from the load resistance R. o
