Learning Objectives Describe, using your own words, the movement of energy and nutrients through ecosystems, focusing on the unidirectional movement of energy and the recycling of nutrients. Write a definition of trophic structure – the feeding relationships among the various species in a community. Understand the concepts of gross primary productivity and net primary productivity. Understand trophic levels (producers and consumers) and the standard rate of efficiency of transfer of energy from one trophic level to the next. Understand what a biogeochemical cycle is. Understand factors that control nutrient cycling (including nutrient loss) from an ecosystem.
