Reflection and Refraction of Light Objective : There were 3 parts to this experiment hence there are 3 objectives and also to perove the law refraction which is the 4 th . 1. Determine the validity of the “Law of Reflection” using the light ray model. 2. Determine the ability of the light ray model to construct the image of an object; in particular, image size and position will be compared with the objects size and position. 3. Determine the ability of the light ray model to predict multiple images between tho mirrors to angle. Only for 60°. 4. Determine the validity of the “Law of Refraction” using Light ray model. Equipment : Box of Pins Corkboard, sheet of cardboard Ruler and protractor Think glass plate Rectangular flat mirror, and blocks Sheets of white paper Part 1: Reflection Procedure : Place a sheet of paper on the corkboard and draw a line MN across the middle of a sheet of paper. Place the mirror on top of the line MN, the mirror must be vertical to the corkboard. Use the holders to hold the mirror so it will not fall. Place a pin at some point P, between 5 and 10 cm in front of the mirror. Place Pin #1 and Pin #2 so that they both line up with the image in the mirror. Make sure point A should be far enough from the point P so the angle is greater than 30°. Repeat the process for a point B on the other side of the pin. Remove the pins and the mirror. Continue the sight lines until they meet at the point P'. Draw in lines from the position of the pin to the line MN where the sight lines intersect the mirror line. Draw the normals to the mirror. Measure the incident and reflected angles and the distance of P and P' from the surface of the mirror. Trace the reflected rays backwards into the mirror to form the image point P’.
