Lesson 1 The Wright Brothers December 17, 1903 will be remembered as one of the most significant dates in the history of invention. This date is truly the birthday of aviation. Orville and Wilbur Wright two bicycle shop owners from Dayton, Ohio made the journey to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina with their untested powered glider named the “Wright Flyer” to see if they could make history. After weeks of delays they finally were able to make two flights each on December 17th 1903. Their research, hard work, and persistence paid off as Orville made history with a short flight that carried him 120 feet through the air for approximately 12 seconds. With this flight Orville Wright became the world’s first flight instructor. The pointers he gave his brother allowed Wilbur to make a second flight to a distance of 175 feet. The final flight of the day conducted by Wilbur was recorded at 852 feet. In this one day the world was “no longer flat” again. This was the beginning of a changed world with a future that would bring about thousands of innovations, and thousands of successful airframes. The Wright brothers most likely had no idea of the industry that had just been created. There are truly millions of jobs that exist in our world today due to the invention of the aircraft. Flight Instruction The Wright brothers had a unique opportunity of experiencing flight in a machine that they alone were the sole occupants for their first flights. As a pilot I have flown about 12 different types of aircraft and each one I learned to fly with the assistance of a professional flight instructor sitting by my side. It is rare in today’s world that a pilot will fly an aircraft for the first time without an instructor in the aircraft. The A-10 Warthog is one aircraft that is still flown solo by a pilot for the first flight. No dual-seat Warthogs exist so the first flight a pilot has in the airplane is a solo flight. Fortunately, advanced flight simulators help the pilot make a smooth transition to the cockpit of this sturdy warplane. One of the industries created by the Wright Brothers with their first flight was the profession of flight instruction. Flight Instruction has become a multi-billion dollar business. In the United States alone there are approximately 600,000 pilots of which about 90,000 are student pilots and another 90,000 are flight instructors. Airlines, business aviation departments, cargo carriers all spend millions of dollars every year training pilots to meet and exceed stringent FAA standards for safe aircraft operation. Companies like Flight Safety International and Boeing provide training for these pilots in simulators that can cost as much as the aircraft themselves. Each year thousands of students begin learning to fly small aircraft at colleges and flight schools
