Lesson 13 Airline Application Implementation and Maintenance Starting with fire, the tools that human beings either harnessed or invented set the stage for civilization, transforming the progress of social relations. Social needs inspire invention. Development of computer applications for the airline industry provides a current case study for this theory. The need for accurate seat inventories and passenger name records set the stage for development and implementation of computer related information and communication technology, the cornerstone of today's global society. Social needs inspired invention and computers became a cornerstone supporting progress in the 20th century. On a global scale, computers have become a source and conduit for information and social interaction that has a potential for removing the barriers that separate human beings. Methodology In software engineering and project management, a methodology is a codified set of practices (accompanied by training materials, formal educational programs, worksheets, and diagramming tools) that may be repeatedly processed to produce software. Software engineering methodologies span many disciplines, including project management, analytical procedures, process specification, design, program coding, testing, and quality assurance. The methodologies guiding this field are collations of all of these disciplines. Management must keep pace with rapidly evolving technical foundations in order to implement the methodologies available for resolution of Information Technology (IT) challenges. Consistent technology advances and improvements in conjunction with a shift toward a standardized enterprise Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) platform reduce acquisition or Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of evolving technologies. The incentive for SOA adoption is the link it provides for multiple computational resources, promoting their reuse regardless of the operating platform. Service-Oriented Architecture was reviewed in Lecture 5. Enterprise architects believe that SOA can help businesses respond more quickly and cost-effectively to changing market conditions. This style of architecture promotes reuse at the macro (service) level rather than micro (user) level. It can also simplify interconnection to - and usage of - existing IT legacy assets. In some respects, SOA is an architectural evolution rather than a revolution that incorporates many of the best practices of previous software architectures. With respect to communications systems there has been minimal development of solutions that use truly static bindings (or interfaces) that communicate with other equipment in the network. By formally embracing an SOA approach, system designers can to take advantage of well-defined, highly inter-operable interfaces.
