THE INFLUENCE OF RACE ON MY COMMUNITY 2 The Influence of Race on my Community The community I spend the most time in is my workplace, MAXIMUS, INC commonly referred to as Maximus. Maximus is a Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) agency that also serves all refugees for Milwaukee County. Race affects every aspect of my community. It dictates how we interact with each other and how we interact with clients. It dictates how we case manage our caseloads. Every action that I and my co-workers take must reflect our deference to civil rights of all groups. Race also affects the culture of my company. Our leaders are diverse as well as line staff. We have a diversity committee in place to celebrate all of the differences found in our workplace. Race is an integral component to my community. What my Community Looks Like My community is made up of many different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Predominantly, my community is filled with African American workers and Hispanic workers. We also have White workers, Arabic American workers, Burmese American workers, Vietnamese American workers, Hmong American workers, and Somalia American workers. Our clients make up all of the above named groups. Looks like Me The majority of the members of my community look like me in one very important way: We are women. Although there are more women present at work, we are still a part of a subordinate group. Schaefer (2006) states, “Gender is another attribute that creates dominant and subordinate groups. Males are the social majority; females, although more numerous, are relegated to the position of the social minority” (p. 8). Although the male gender is slightly present in my community, the majority of the top leaders of my local agency are men. There are

This is also true for our body shapes, facial features, and hair textures. Each race has its own distinguishing physical features. Leadership Interaction Leaders within my community try to treat each employee and customer in the same manner. We have Policy Procedures (PPs) in place to help ensure that each interaction with all customers and co-workers are consistent. We also have a strict Code of Ethics that must be adhered to at all times. In the event that any of the codes are broken, we have an anonymous reporting line that can be utilized without fear of retribution. Our Chief Executive Officer, Richard Montoni, has helped to develop standards the shape our corporate culture. Montoni (2010) states, “MAXIMUS is committed to more than mere adherence to laws and regulations. Our conduct reflects the highest level of integrity and ethics in dealing with each other, our
