PSY/201 Contemporary Psychodynamic Therapy Systematic Desensitization Cognitive Therapy Summary of Approach Psychodynamic therapy is based on Freud’s classic psychoanalysis. Therapy usually lasts for about 3 months for a total of 20 sessions. The therapist controls the therapy and advises the patient directly. The therapist puts less focus on the patient’s past and childhood, and instead concentrates on current issues and relationships. The goal of this therapy is to bring impulses and conflicts from the unconscious mind forward to the conscious mind so that they may be dealt with and resolved.
