In the short story Greasy Lake, T. Coraghessan Boyle shows the changing of boys to men. During the time of teenage years it was cool to be bad. The three boys in this story, 19 and stupid, have no clue how the real world works. They just want to use their parent’s money and cars to have some adventure. After partying all night, the three characters decide to go to a local hangout, Greasy Lake, hoping to find some last- minute excitement before going back to their homes. In Greasy Lake, T.C Boyle uses the theme of being bad using Jeff, Digby, and the unnamed narrator in the story to show how someone always want to be more than they really are. When we are trying to be bad there’s always competition to be on top. Boyle depicts this when he writes, “able to manage a ford with lousy shocks over a rutted and gutted blacktop road at 85 while tolling a joint.” The narrator, who is the protagonist of the story, describes his clan of friends as “dangerous characters”. He boasts that, “we wore torn-up leather jackets, slouched around with toothpicks in our mouths, sniffed glue and ether and what somebody claimed was cocaine.” The boy’s characters can also be shown by “Digby wore a gold star in his right ear,” which shows how the youth disobey their parent’s wishes for them to be good young men. After this it’s also stated “and allowed his father to pay his tuition to Cornell,’ which shows that Digby isn’t as bad as thought to have been. After partying all night long, the three boys go to their hang out place, Greasy Lake. This lake that was situated outside of the town was once a beautiful lake, “ now now it was fetid and murky, the mud banks glittering with broken glass and strewn with beer cans and the charred remains of bonfires.
