In cryptography, a key is a piece of information (a parameter) that determines the functional output of a cryptographic algorithm or cipher. Key turns a plaintext / cleartext into cipher text using available algorithm. It can be a series of buts used by computer program, or it can be a passphrase used by humans that is then converted into a series of bits used by computer program.
